lake st clair

Camped on the weekend at a lovely spot called Lake St Clair.  The pano is from a hike we went on with the kids, up a couple of hills just near the campsite.  It’s 180 degrees with me standing in the middle and I’ve just photostitched it together.  Would have been nice to go a bit higher, but Daiz was tired so we headed back to camp.

So the only downside {literally!} is the sloping hill all around the edge of the lake.  You have the marvelous choice of either sleeping with your feet downhill or your body sideways on an angle.  Either way, the whole family has the potential to end up sliding down during the night, and wakes up crumpled together in whichever part of the tent is downhill.

Hanging about…

Time for Nige to have a go by himself {thanks Russell!}

Nice to be home, in my own bed tonight!

camping @ riverwood downs

We recently went camping for 4 nights at Riverwood Downs {about 1.5 hours drive, Barrington Tops}.  Kids had lots of fun, and there was even a restaurant there where we could sneak to for deserts.  Glamping, not camping!

The river was full for the first couple of days, so we made the most of the rapids and paddling around.  Jeremy even hooked up a flying fox to amuse the kids.

Camping at Yellow Rock {take two}

We went camping this weekend.  Let me start by saying that I’m not a camper.  However, I’ve been twice in the last 6 months because the kids just love it.  We had all our gear packed up on Friday afternoon as a light rain set in.  The husband assured me not to “be alarmed” at the weather; which is actually quite alarming.  He was certain the rain was only a passing patch and it would clear up.  He likes to browse BOM.  So we thought It Can’t be Worse Than Last Year, and set out with trailer, kids, and supplies in tow.  He has now informed me that he was deceived by BOM because something about the isobars not shifting for 12 hours and some trough was doing something blah blah blah blah when it shouldn’t have blah blah.  Anyway…

…it rained all afternoon, all night, and drizzled a bit the next morning.  The sun struggled to get a glimpse of us through the clouds in the afternoon.  Despite the weather {which was 100% better than last year!} we had a lot of fun.  The kids slept exceptionally well considering that the first night in a new place is always a little sketchy.  They all played together really well, ran around in the light rain, ate far too much snack food, and crashed in bed at 7pm.  Unfortunately the rain on the tent was pretty loud, so they woke up a couple of times during the night, and then were wide awake by 6ish.  I remember when I used to be a morning person.

That day lots of other friends dropped buy to visit and sit around the campfire {it got off to a smoky start after all the rain – but turned into a beautiful fire}.  We had Sabbath School with the kids – sang songs, did some crafty type activities, and had a story.  That afternoon Jerry and some of the other Menfolk set up a swing and harness from one of the trees and the Little People lined up Cherub-Like for ages to take turns on it.  It really was a site to behold.  The lining up nicely, I mean, although the swinging was also breath taking.

Look mum, I dug a hole!

The kids had SUCH a full day Playing and Adventuring that they absolutely crashed into bed at 6.30.  We sat around the campfire eating and talking.  Then I heard a “mum…” from the tent and went in to check on the girls.  The Popstar cried a bit then proceeded to vomit on her sleeping bag, me, and herself.  It was really gross.  We carried the poor little darlin’ out of the tent in her stinky sleeping bag, and put her in a warm shower to wash all the vomit off.  Then we put both kids in the car and drove home.  We didn’t have any spare bedding for Pops since she vomitted on her bag as well as the mattress.  The tent had a horrible vomit smell in it, and we thought what if she is really sick and vomits through the night?  {I suspected it was merely the result of the oodles of food she’d crammed into her stomach that day, but couldn’t be sure of that}.

Thankfully Yellow Rock is only half an hour from home, so we were home by 9.30, put the girls in their own beds.  Then the lovely job of rinsing out all the clothes and bedding.  Thank God it wasn’t at 3 am instead!!  The Popstar woke up bright and early, cheerful as anything, so we all headed back to camp to pack everything up.

Phew.  And there goes another weekend of my life {that I’ll never get back} spent camping.

happy campers

I’m finally back in the land of the living! After camping at Yellow Rock this weekend it’s great to get home to my own shower, bed, food and air-conditioning. We arrived on Friday afternoon and set up. It’s only 20 minutes or so from home which is AWESOME because if it all goes south with the kids we can just pack up and drive home. We borrowed Kerri & Gav’s camping trailer which folds out into a tent, and has beds and a kitchen attached. Not exactly roughing it, but for One Who Does Not Go Camping it was great to have a little luxury. Poppy and Daisy were SO excited to be going camping and hanging out with their friends all weekend. They couldn’t wait to pile into the car, and sat there for about 20 minutes before we were actually ready to leave, in anticipation of the trip. Despite being One Who Does Not Go Camping, I was feeling excited for the kids – they’ve never been camping before. In fact, probably the mother-guilt over never having given them that experience before was the main reason I agreed to go on the campout in the first place!

It was a hot, hot day on Friday {about 38 degrees or so} and we heard on the radio as we were driving to the campsite that there were severe storm warnings. Who knows why we pushed on regardless – but it turned out to be ok after all. It started to rain as we were all setting up our tents, and Sarah & Darren had a huge tarp that got put up as a communal area. It was a real blessing as it also saved us from the heat of the next day. We managed to finally get tea done, and the kids in dry clothes and into bed. They had a fantastic time racing around in the rain, and in each family tent. We were thinking…mmm kids into bed, then we can all settle under the tarp and socialise in peace…ahhh the serenity. The wind and rain had picked up a fair bit, and there was a lot of lightening and thunder. We thought we’d stick it out since it would probably be a short, intense storm and then be gone.

We’d finally got most things organised, and were standing outside our tent talking when * CRACK * we turned around to see the tarp collapsing. The guys decided that they’d just fasten the tarp down where it fell until the storm passed, so the dishes, tables and chairs all stayed underneath. The storm did pass, and by about 9 or 10pm the worst of it was over. We put the tarp back up, and settled in to play scrabble and chat. FINALLY the kids went to sleep after yelling “muuuuuuuuuummmmmmm” a thousand times. The tiredness finally outweighed the excitement of camping and they settled down. The night was incredibly balmy and warm, the breeze was perfect, and I totally adore this kind of weather – the smell of the rain and the vividness of the trees and grass. We finally went to bed – but not much sleep since the kids were unsettled in a strange place.

Saturday started out cool, but by mid-morning we could feel the heat of the day starting to press in on us and we knew it was going to be another hot one. Lots of friends came out for the day to have lunch and let the kids play. Probably about 60 people were there altogether. The kids were fairly cranky all day, so Nige and I took them for a drive in the car and they had a short nap in the air-conditioning. I’m glad we did, as they were exhausted.

That afternoon some people went down to the lake and had a swim. It started to cool down in the afternoon again, thankfully no rain! It was a little easier to get the kids to bed on the second night – thankfully! – and I was so exhausted that I wasn’t far behind them. Lots of people who are more hardcore than I :) stayed up chatting and playing games. Woke up bright and early again on Sunday morning, and started the process of packing up…that’s absolutely my least favourite part of the whole trip!

Got home by lunch time and gave the kids some food and then sent them both to bed. Poppy just wandered out of her room about 10 minutes ago but Daisy is still out to the world.

I might have changed my mind about camping…the kids had a great time, and it was actually quite a lot of fun. Maybe I’ll become One Who Camps Occasionally.
